Something About Mary: A 72-Year-Old Semifinals Qualifier

Coach Tina Ramos/Reviewed by Coach Brian Conroy, CF-L2/ Updated 2026-08-12/ 6 min

When people say they're too old to start training, we tell them about Mary — who found the barbell late and rode it all the way to the CrossFit Semifinals at 72.

The athlete the leaderboard can't explain

Walk into a weekday morning class and you'll likely find Mary mid-workout — deliberate, precise, unhurried, and quietly outworking members forty years younger. At 72, the Dedham resident qualified for the CrossFit Semifinals in her age division, placing her among the fittest women in her age group in the world.

What the leaderboard doesn't show is that Mary didn't grow up an athlete. She started the way most of our members start: nervous, certain everyone would be fitter than her, and convinced the barbell was for someone else.

How a 72-year-old trains for Semifinals

Nothing about Mary's training is exotic. She takes classes like everyone else, scales when scaling is smart, and treats recovery as part of the program rather than an admission of weakness. The differences are consistency and patience: she shows up on the scheduled days whether motivation does or not, and she has stacked those unremarkable days into remarkable years.

Her week blends CrossFit classes with strength work and easy aerobic sessions — the same mix we recommend to every athlete over 50, tuned to her recovery. Age changed the knobs, not the machine.

What Mary proves about aging

The research is unambiguous: muscle, bone density and power respond to progressive training at every age, and the people who lose the most function are the ones who stop asking their body for it. Mary is that research wearing lifting shoes. Her deadlift protects her bone density; her wall balls protect her power; her class friendships protect everything else.

She'd wave off the word 'inspiring.' Her actual advice to new members twice her junior: 'Just come Tuesday. Then come Thursday. The rest sorts itself out.'
