The CrossFit Open: POP vs. SOP — Two Ways to Play

Coach Tina Ramos/Reviewed by Coach Miguel, CF-L2/ Updated 2026-08-12/ 6 min

Every year the Open splits the gym into two camps: athletes chasing a score, and everyone else wondering if it's for them. It is — you just have to pick your acronym.

What the Open actually is

The CrossFit Open is the sport's worldwide qualifier: three weeks, one workout announced each week, performed by hundreds of thousands of athletes from garage gyms to Games champions on the exact same leaderboard. For the top fraction of a percent it is the first step to the CrossFit Games. For everyone else it is something more useful: an annual, standardized test of your fitness.

POP: Pursuit of Performance

POP athletes treat the Open as competition. They follow the announcement, strategize pacing, maybe repeat a workout to squeeze out five more reps, and check the leaderboard at midnight. If that's you — excellent. The Open gives your training a sharp edge: judged reps, real standards and a number you can compare against last year's you.

For POP athletes we run judged heats, help with pacing plans, and yes — talk you out of the third redo attempt that will not actually improve your score.

SOP: Spirit of Participation

SOP athletes do the same workouts in the same heats — scaled or as prescribed — with zero interest in the leaderboard. They're there for Friday Night Lights: the music, the neighbor cheering their last wall ball, the discovery that they can do more than they thought. Every year someone gets their first pull-up during the Open, and the gym erupts like it's a Games final.

SOP is not a lesser Open. The entire point of a community fitness test is the community. Three weeks a year, the whole gym trains the same test together — that's rare, and it's the best three weeks on the calendar.

Which should you pick?

Pick the one that makes you show up. Some members alternate — POP one year, SOP the next. First-year members: we recommend SOP, no leaderboard-checking allowed. Learn the rhythm, feel the Friday nights, log your scores. Next year, past-you becomes the only competitor who matters.

Either way, sign up. The Open workout you're nervous about is always scalable, and the version of you that did it beats the version that watched.
