Coach Tina Ramos/Reviewed by Coach Marc Tucker, CF-L2/ Updated 2026-08-14/ 5 min

You know him as a regular at the powerlifting sessions and a noon WOD crusher. Sukesh's road here ran from Delhi through a PhD, McKinsey and Texas — and it's a very American story.

An American dream, imported

Even if you don't know him by his Instagram handle (@mortgagehomey), you know Sukesh Shekar — a regular at the powerlifting sessions and a noon WOD crusher. His favorite lift is the clean & jerk, his favorite benchmark is Karen, and his story is one of the best in the gym.

Sukesh grew up in Delhi, India. At 18, encouraged by his grandfather to chase his dreams in the US, he left behind his family and everything familiar, landing in Florida on a college scholarship to study biochemistry. A love of science and adventure carried him to a PhD at Notre Dame — where science stopped being the only thing keeping him in the country. He met Meghan. "She was smart, cute and thoughtful," Sukesh recalls fondly. Before she disappeared to medical school, he took a chance and asked her out.

From gold mines to mortgages

They dated long-distance — Meghan pursuing medicine at Stony Brook, Sukesh solving refining problems in gold and copper mining for McKinsey in Houston. They married, welcomed their first child, and while Meghan completed her fellowship in pediatric oncology, they bought their first home — which opened a can of worms in the world of mortgage lending.

A problem solver at heart, Sukesh founded Altgage to help homeowners understand mortgage debt and pay it down smarter. The business found its real calling helping first-time buyers navigate the process and secure better rates — cutting the standard one-to-two-month wait and saving buyers real money. It took off in Texas, and now Sukesh — recently approved as a mortgage broker in Massachusetts, no easy feat — is bringing the same opportunity to his community here.

Here to stay

Since moving to the Boston area, Sukesh and Meghan have welcomed their third child and put down roots in Dedham. Meghan is a pediatric oncologist at Children's Hospital; Sukesh is expanding his mortgage business and his clean & jerk in roughly equal measure. His BIG dream: help everyone achieve home ownership — perhaps an extension of his own American dream.
